JICHS is one of the only multi-level, non-magnet Piano programs in all of Charleston County School District. Students may respectively take Piano 1, Piano 2, Piano 3 Honors, and/or IB Piano according to appropriate level.
These Piano courses are designed for students who have an expressed interest in playing the piano with little to no prior musical experience. It is specifically designed to teach the literature and fundamentals of keyboard music. Students will learn to perform more easily, use proper technique, show growth in musicianship and music reading, develop and understanding of a wide variety of music, learn about the historical and cultural background of works performed, and gain a greater appreciation of music as a means of expression and as a form of communication. All students will perform a recital at the end of the semester. Piano 2 and 3 students will perform at one other public performance or competition throughout the semester as well as attend workshops/clinics, and attend public concerts.
The small class sizes of no more than fifteen students, tailoring of musical skills to fit each students’ abilities and learning styles makes taking piano an added bonus to the James Island Charter High School experience!
