The JICHS String Orchestra Program is probably the fastest growing music programs in all of Charleston County School District. James Island currently has well over 200 students in their feeder program grades 5-12 thanks to extremely qualified and strong teaching at the Elementary and Middle School levels. Students may respectively take Strings 1, Strings 2, Strings 3, Strings 4, Strings 3 Honors, Strings 4 Honors and/or IB Strings according to appropriate level.
Students in the JICHS String Orchestra Program have had the opportunity to participate in a wide-variety of activities including: A multitude of public performances, Region Orchestra, State Strings Concert Festival, Solo & Ensemble, The Mark Woods “Electrify Your Strings” performance, JI Summer Strings Camp, Charleston Concert Association, and the Grand National Adjudicators Invitational in Chattanooga, TN.
These Strings courses are designed for students who have participated in strings in middle school or the previous year in high school. Students continue a sequential development of skills necessary to become proficient on their musical instrument. The course is organized so that students will learn orchestra and solo repertoire each year while they develop an understanding of the concepts of music and the cultural heritage of the music studied. Emphasis will be placed on the development of good tone, accurate pitch, growth in music reading, ability to perform more easily while understanding a wide variety of music.
